Simulation of Medium Access Protocols in LANs

University of California, Santa Barbara, Electrical and Computer Engineering Department; Santa Barbara, CA

The model simulates prioritized and non-prioritized random access protocols in broadcast LAN buses. A very simple and flexible strategy called "Plug Process" provides contention resolution among requesting stations, mutual exclusion on the single server (the bus) and implementation of several transmission policies. Collision, priority assessment, and tie breaking procedures are simulated for the contention resolution period using two global flags (or a flag and a counter). A powerful set of parameters is available for the user to simulate a broad range of operating conditions.
